Benefits of Dental Implants

There are many benefits of dental implants over bridges and dentures:

  • Next best thing to natural, healthy teeth - restores lost tooth/teeth so it/they look, feel, fit and function like a natural tooth
  • Help maintain jawbone's shape and density while stabilizing the bone, preventing its loss
  • Long-lasting dental solution unlike bridges and dentures
  • Allow you to eat, chew, smile, talk and look completely natural
  • Retain your natural face shape and smile by replacing missing teeth that could have caused facial sag
  • Protect healthy bone and protect your health

Dental implants are the ONLY dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates natural bone which helps stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss. Plus, unlike dentures and bridges, they are a lifetime lasting dental solution for missing teeth. Since implants don't rely on neighboring teeth for support, they don't compromise the health of your natural teeth.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post (similar to a tooth root) that is surgically placed into the jawbone beneath the gum line that allows replacement teeth or bridges to be mounted to that area. Implants do not have to be anchored to other teeth like bridges nor do they have the ability to come loose like dentures. Because they fuse to your jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial, natural-looking teeth.

Why choose a dental implant specialist over a general dentist?

First and foremost, there is a significant difference between "dentists who do implants" and "dental implant specialists." The practice of implant dentistry requires expertise in planning, surgery and tooth restoration and implants are as much about art and experience as it is about science.

  • Extensive experience and training in dental implants compared to general dentists
  • Practice dedicated to dental implants
  • Up-to-date on latest dental implant technology and practices

Since your teeth are as unique as you are, it takes a skilled dental practitioner to provide quality, natural-looking dental implants that will last a lifetime. Dr. Raval specialize in dental implants and have years of experience in successfully replacing missing teeth with dental implants.

Dr. Raval, Dr. Moon, and Dr. Easley all stay up to date in the latest dental implant technology through continuing education and Dr. Raval's Master’s research project on microbial interaction with restorative implant materials is considered a world’s first and is guaranteed to change the way we restore dental implants.

How do I know if I am a candidate for dental implants?

Generally speaking, if you are missing one or many teeth, you are a good candidate for dental implants.

However, the best candidates for dental implants:

  • Are in good general and oral health
  • Have adequate bone in their jaw and healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease
  • Missing one or multiple teeth

There are some conditions that affect whether dental implants are right for you such as uncontrollable diabetes, cancer, radiation to the jaws, smoking, alcoholism, or uncontrolled PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE. If you have questions about whether dental implants are the right choice for you give us a call today to schedule a consultation.

How much do dental implants cost?

No two patients or their treatment plans are exactly alike so the number of appointments, procedures, and costs varies according to your unique dental needs. After an initial examination and assessment, we are able to provide you with a comprehensive dental treatment plan including the estimated number of appointments and costs for your dental implant treatment.

When it comes to cost for dental implants, consider that a dental implant restored tooth is the next best thing to healthy, natural teeth. They last longer and typically cost no more than other treatments to restore a tooth. For example, dental implants are typically less expensive than bridges over the long-term as bridges typically have to be replaced in only 5-7 years. Plus, other traditional options such as bridges and dentures typically fall short of dental implants in patient satisfaction. When it comes to having a natural-looking, long-lasting beautiful smile, dental implants are an investment that is well worth it.

Recognizing long-term patient benefits over other treatment options, there are dental insurance companies who have started providing some dental insurance for implants. We are happy to work with you in determining what your dental implant insurance covers and doesn't cover. If your insurance doesn't cover dental implants, they may give you an allowance towards implants equal to the cost of a bridge or dentures. We also offer convenient payment options to make dental implants affordable for you.

Do I need a single or multiple implants?

Single or multiple implants are dependent upon how many missing teeth you have. If you are only missing a single tooth, then a single implant will do the trick in restoring your smile.

When several teeth in a row are missing, multiple implants are needed to support a permanent bridge (a set of replacement teeth). If you have lost all of your teeth, multiple implants are needed in order to secure a full bridge or full dentures.

What should I know about post-treatment care?

Not only are dental implants long-lasting but they don't require any special care, unlike dentures. Consider your replacement teeth the same as your natural teeth. Brush and floss them regularly and continue with 2 dental check-ups per year. Like your natural teeth, the better you take care of your replacement teeth, the longer they will last.

For our implant patients, we like to see you once a year for the first 3 years following the placement of your implants.

What are the implant services offered at Implant and Periodontic Specialists?

Our dental implant services include:

With the loss of upper back teeth, sinuses often enlarge. As a result, this can impede the ability to place dental implants as the sinus is an air-filled space and dental implants need to be surrounded by solid bone. Sinus augmentation is a surgical procedure that returns the sinus cavity to its original position and replaces the bone that has been lost. The new bone graft takes about 6-9 months to heal before the dental implants can be placed.

When there is insufficient bone quantity to support dental implants a biocompatible membrane between the gum and bone is placed which acts as a barrier. This barrier prevents down growth of the gum into the underlying bone as it heals. In some cases, a bone graft or tissue-stimulating proteins may be placed under the membrane to encourage your body's natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue. Within a few weeks, the membranes around the teeth should dissolve or reabsorb.

With infected teeth, it is not uncommon to have lost bone when the tooth is removed. In these cases, various types of bone grafting can be done at the same time the tooth is removed in order to place the implant at a later date.

We have special software on our computer that allows us to evaluate your dental CT scan in three dimensions for bone quality, bone quantity, and bone location, enabling the best possible placement of your dental implants. This also allows us to work closely and smoothly with your restorative dentist to ensure an ideal result where your dental implants are concerned.

Like teeth, implants can accumulate plaque and tartar. Once your dental restoration is complete it's important to keep the area clean and infection-free through proper oral hygiene and dental care. Whether you have a single tooth replaced or multiple teeth replaced, keep your implants healthy with a professional cleaning schedule. At the time of your dental implant placement, we can help determine the optimal time interval for you.
